BOLIVAR, Mo. – “The Awakening,” a three-day student-led event for the sole purpose of seeking God to bring revival within the University family and Bolivar community, will be held at Pike Auditorium on the Bolivar campus Friday-Sunday, Oct. 23-25.

Tyler Eads“Several weeks ago, I felt the Lord’s calling for the need to see revival at Southwest Baptist University,” said Tyler Eads, a junior accounting and Christian studies major from Neosho. “I am led to believe that there is a great need for a spiritual awakening at the university, and it will only be through a sovereign act of God that this will occur.”

Each day will offer a gathering from 6-8 p.m. in Pike Auditorium in Mabee Chapel, featuring student preachers, prayer time, Bible readings, student testimonies, worship and more.

Night one of “The Awakening” will focus on the Gospel, with the second night focusing on man’s response to the Gospel, and night three on God’s glory.

Students will have additional opportunities to learn about and practice spiritual disciplines such as prayer, Bible study, confession and lifestyle evangelism.

Seeing a student take the lead on an event such as “The Awakening” is of great encouragement to Dr. Matt Kimbrough, division head of The Courts Redford Division of Christian Ministry.

Dr. Matt Kimbrough“My role in facilitating ‘The Awakening’ has given me great joy this semester,” Kimbrough said. “We are not waiting for revival to begin on Oct. 23-25. We are asking God to spread the spirit of revival that has already begun among our students, including Tyler and his team. I am asking believers to join us in praying for God to awaken hearts to the beauty of his grace and the power of the Gospel.

“Maybe ‘The Awakening’ might be the spark God uses to stoke the fire of revival on the SBU campus, throughout Missouri, and even across the world. To that end, I long for pastors and churches to pray for this event and join me in fasting on Friday, Oct. 23 as we beg the Lord to bring an awakening.”

While students are the main audience, SBU/SWBC alumni, church leaders, faculty and staff, and all who desire spiritual awakening are encouraged to join. Physical distancing and masking will be required for each session.

“Will you not revive us again, that your people may rejoice in you?” (Psalm 85:6, ESV).

“That’s the vision,” Eads said. “Throughout the Bible, God demonstrates a great desire to revive spiritually dead hearts and return those who have wandered to loving obedience.

“God has been preparing Southwest Baptist University for such a revival, especially in the midst of the pandemic. There is a hunger across campus to experience the precious reality of knowing God and being known by God. Such a spiritual awakening is dependent entirely on prayer. It calls for corporate penitence, fasting and prayer. And, I want you to join me.”
