Winter 2020 Ceremony Details

Note: Face coverings are required for all graduates and guests attending commencement and while on the SBU campus.

Times & Locations: To comply with health department guidelines for gathering sizes, SBU will host five commencement ceremonies on November 20. Below are the times and locations for each ceremony, listed by the group recognized at that ceremony. Choose a ceremony to view more details about which students will be recognized at that event.

All graduates have been emailed their specific ceremony times. Correspondence was sent to graduates' SBU and personal email address on file.

May 2020 graduates who completed the participation survey to reserve their spot will walk in this ceremony since there was no in-person ceremony in May.

This ceremony will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, November 20, 2020 in the Jane & Ken Meyer Wellness and Sports Center on the SBU Bolivar campus.

This ceremony will honor the graduates from the College of Arts and Sciences. It will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, November 20, 2020 in Mabee Chapel on the SBU Bolivar campus.

Regalia Details

  • May 2020 graduates received their regalia in the spring. Those graduates are responsible for bringing all regalia, cords and hoods to the ceremony in November. These items will not be provided again.
  • Regalia for November 2020 graduates will be mailed to the address the graduate has supplied. Graduates should expect regalia to arrive at the designated address no later than the first week of November. Graduates are responsible to bring all of their regalia to wear on commencement day. Honor cords will be distributed at lineup.
  • Face coverings must be worn during commencement.

Graduate FAQ

No. There is no rehearsal. Therefore, reporting at lineup no later than 1 hour prior to the start of the ceremony is important so that you receive necessary instructions. 

All graduates need to report to their assigned locations no later than one hour before the ceremony begins.

For ceremonies held in the Wellness Center, report to the Intramural Gym for ceremony lineup (Building #33 on this map).

For ceremonies held in Mabee Chapel, report to the classroom spaces in the chapel building for ceremony lineup (Building #27 on this map).

Only your cell phone will be allowed on. It is crucial for you to have your phone charged and with you on the day of the ceremony. There will be a required alumni survey you must complete upon your arrival to the ceremony line up, as well as a digital check-in process prior to you entering the stage to receive your diploma. Leave all other personal belongings with a guest, as the lineup location is not locked during the ceremony.

Recommended attire:

  • Men: White dress shirt, dark slacks and dark dress shoes
  • Women: Dark dress (or dark skirt/slacks and blouse) and dark dress shoes

Caps are worn level with tassels on the left at all times. Men will remove caps at times of prayer; ladies will leave caps on at all times. This regalia is for you to keep.

Undergraduate degrees: The stole is worn like an honor cord, draped around the neck with the seal on your right. Those receiving honor cords will wear them on top of the stole.

Only the stoles, honor cords distributed at graduation lineup, and medals awarded to the Dutile Honors Program graduates may be worn with the graduation gown. It is NOT appropriate to wear cords/sashes/pins/ribbons from honor societies or Who's Who organizations during commencement.

May 2020 graduate degrees: Please be sure to bring your hood with you in order for it to be presented to you during the commencement ceremony.

Yes, face masks are required on the SBU campus. Graduates must wear a face covering during the commencement ceremony.

Graduates are encouraged to limit the number of guests to no more than six to allow family members of all graduates the opportunity to attend and to allow for social distancing guidelines. Tickets or reservations are not required for guests.

Yes! A livestream of the commencement ceremonies will be available.

Links to the live streams will be available a few weeks prior to the ceremonies.

Your attendance at the ceremony is required. If you cannot attend due to extreme circumstances, you must gain permission to graduate "in absentia." Requests must be submitted as soon as possible but no later than October 16, 2020. To make a request, send an email to provostoffice@SBUniv.edu, stating your reason for being absent. You will receive a response by email within five business days.

A minimum of 45 semester hours of credit must have been completed at SBU prior to semester of graduation. For the graduation ceremony, honors are calculated on overall Grade Point Average from the previous semester.

  • Summa Cum Laude: 3.850-4.00
  • Magna Cum Laude: 3.700-3.849
  • Cum Laude: 3.500-3.699

After final semester grades are completed, official honors will be determined for transcripts.

Honor cords will be distributed at graduation line-up.

Announcements may be ordered directly from CB Announcements. They will be on campus outside of the SBU Bookstore on Monday, October 5th from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m., if you would like to speak with them in-person.

The list of graduates will be posted online, on the Media Relations page, once grades have been finalized.

News releases will be sent to Missouri newspapers.

Diplomas will be available within four weeks of graduation.

  • Pick up in the Registrar's Office: You are encouraged to pick up your diploma in the Registrar's Office. Please call (417) 328-1896 if you plan to pick up your diploma so that you can be notified when it is available.
  • Receive by mail: Diplomas not picked up in the Registrar's Office will be mailed to the address you supplied when you submitted your online application to graduate. If there has been a change of address since completing this application you will need to notify the Registrar’s Office.

All degrees will be granted contingent upon successful completion of all academic degree requirements, which includes the Community Life and Worship (CLW) requirements for graduates on the Bolivar campus, and payment of all financial balances. Once grades are determined and finalized, diplomas will be mailed to students who have successfully completed all requirements.

Seating is first-come, first-served.

It is important to note we are conducting five commencement ceremonies spread between two different buildings on Friday, November 20. Time will be taken between each ceremony to provide the proper cleaning of each commencement space. The doors will be locked during the cleaning process. Due to these cleaning procedures, and out of respect for the families at the ceremony prior to yours, we ask that you arrive to your specific ceremony space no earlier than 30 minutes prior to the start of commencement.

There are handicap spaces in the Geneva Casebolt Music Center parking lot. They are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

There will be a designated area for special needs in each ceremony space. SBU Staff will be on hand to assist with the location of these areas and to answer any questions.
