Multiple commencement ceremonies are held to honor SBU graduates. Due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the Spring 2020 ceremonies will be broadcast online at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 16.

Spring 2020 graduates also will have the option of walking in an in-person commencement ceremony in December. More details will be released in the fall.

Three separate ceremonies recognizing associate, bachelor and graduate degree recipients will be available for viewing simultaneously and also available for viewing for at least one year after May 16, 2020.

Frequently Asked Questions

Each graduate’s name will be announced during the ceremony, along with a contributed photo and message. Graduates will be receiving emails from Marching Order and Stage Clip asking for information. After the ceremonies are broadcast on May 16, graduates can view and download their personalized ceremony clip to share on social media.
Graduate fees cover many costs incurred in completing a degree, including the printing and mailing of diplomas and transcripts, verification expenses, regalia and event costs (whether an on-campus or online event). Each graduate will receive a package in the mail with their regalia and other mementos. Therefore, no graduation fees will be reimbursed.

Diplomas will be mailed within four weeks of graduation to the address you supplied when you submitted your online application to graduate.

All degrees will be granted contingent upon successful completion of all academic degree requirements, which includes the Community Life and Worship (CLW) requirements for graduates on the Bolivar campus, and payment of all financial balances. Once grades are determined and finalized, diplomas will be mailed to students who have successfully completed all requirements.

Yes, student Life Beautiful Award winners and the Orien B. Hendrix Distinguished Teacher Award will be awarded during the Bachelor's degree ceremony at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 16.

Yes, Spring 2020 graduates will have the option of walking in in an on-campus commencement ceremony in December. More details to come this fall.

Graduates receiving more than one degree will participate in the ceremony of their highest degree and will receive the appropriate regalia for that degree. This is the practice for in-person and online ceremonies.

A minimum of 45 semester hours of credit must have been completed at SBU prior to semester of graduation. For the graduation ceremony, honors are calculated on overall Grade Point Average from the previous semester.

  • Summa Cum Laude: 3.850-4.00
  • Magna Cum Laude: 3.700-3.849
  • Cum Laude: 3.500-3.699

After final semester grades are completed, official honors will be determined for transcripts.

The list of graduates will be posted online, on the Media Relations page, once grades have been finalized.
