Shortly after coming to Southwest Baptist University, Valerie realized that her original
major wasn't the best path for her. Unsure of what to pursue instead, she paid a visit
to her advisor in SBU's University Success Center, who helped her reconsider her focus.
Valerie credits SBU faculty and the University Success Center for helping her find
a new direction.
"My advisor suggested that I apply for early acceptance to the SBU physical therapy program because she thought it would be a good fit for me," Valerie said. "I fell in love with the exercise science major and was accepted to the PT program. I believe that God used SBU to direct me down the path that He wanted me to go."
Valerie, who graduated from SBU in 2015 and is currently in SBU's doctor of physical therapy program, enjoyed her coursework and appreciated the support she received from faculty, who were essential as she prepared for graduate school.
"The SBU academics are fantastic," she said. "I was challenged by the curriculum and prepared well for my field. My professors helped me work to the best of my abilities and go above and beyond what I believed I could do."
Outside of the classroom, Valerie's experience was enhanced by everything from teaching fitness classes at SBU's Wellness Center to participating in groups like University Activities Council.
"Through involvement in these organizations I was able to meet people who cared for the students of SBU and desired for the school to become home for everyone who attended," she said. "They invested in me and gave me opportunities to grow as a student, a leader, a professional and a Christian."
Looking back at her experience, Valerie found SBU's strong academics, caring staff and faculty, and vibrant campus life to be life-changing and deeply enriching.
"God used the people and opportunities at SBU to reveal to me what He would have me do for the rest of my life," she said. "My professional and personal goals were developed and encouraged at SBU."
