Sami Oghide, Web Systems & Design alum

For Sami Oghide, the transition from college to the “real world” was a smooth one because of the education she received at SBU.

Sami graduated with a degree in web systems & design and now works as a software developer at The App Pros.

“Coming up onto graduation, you always feel a little (actually a lot, if we’re being honest) unprepared for the real world,” Sami said. “But, going from SBU straight into industry has been a smoother transition than I would have ever guessed. I didn't realize until after, just how much SBU prepared me for my career.”

The integration of faith and academics helped Sami grow in her faith, while also guiding her as she pursued her degree.

“The love of Christ is so apparent at SBU and you’re constantly surrounded by Him while you’re here,” Sami said. “From verses on the wall, to the prayer said before a test, to the dorm hall Bible studies, He is always the focus.

“It can be so easy to lose focus of Him, but SBU has done a good job of implementing faith into the academic life.”

The support of SBU faculty also has played a big part in Sami’s success.

“They were always encouraging and truly believed in me and my future success, and that impacted me in a way that I won't ever forget,” Sami said. “Their office doors are always open, allowing you to walk in and ask a question or even just chill and talk about Marvel movies. They’re just awesome.”

As Sami reflects on her SBU experience, the value cannot be measured.

“The people alone make SBU worth it,” she said, “add on a Christ-centered education and well, it makes it all worth it. College is hard: mentally, spiritually and emotionally. But, God used SBU to shape me into the person I am today, and for that, SBU will always have a place in my heart.”
