Rachel Culbertson '19

Rachel Culbertson '19, SBU alumA connection made in the classroom at Southwest Baptist University played a key role in where Rachel Culbertson ’19 would end up after graduation.

And, Rachel, who graduated with a degree in elementary education, is thankful for that opportunity.

“A recruiter from the school where I am currently employed came to SBU and was allowed to speak in some of my education classes,” said Rachel, who currently is teaching English at MeySen Academy at Sendai, Japan. “Without this exposure, I may not have ever found out about my current job.”

The support of the SBU faculty and the education she received prepared Rachel for her new career in a new country.

“My time in the education department gave me the skills needed to be a successful educator and confidence that I can do my job well,” Rachel said. “The professors care about more than academic success. They desire a personal relationship with their students and are always there to encourage and counsel.

“The education professors really are second-to-none. I don’t think I’d be where I am without them.”

Rachel also felt encouraged in her Christian walk while a student at SBU.

“I was given opportunities to walk outside of my comfort zone and was challenged in my faith,” Rachel said. “My professors were always quick to point me toward Christ in any situation and always encouraged me with biblical perspective.

“At SBU, you not only get a solid education, but you also grow spiritually and personally with the support of professors and other students. The opportunities at SBU are unique and vital to a well-rounded education.

“I love SBU because it is a place where people care, students grow, and God works.”
