With a military career on his horizon, Philip Holmes felt well-prepared academically by SBU as he prepared for a career serving in the United States Marine Corps.
Philip, who graduated with a degree in political science, had previously attended Officer Candidate School with the USMC and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant after graduating from SBU.
“Various history knowledge, the inner workings of the government and information regarding Excel have prepared me and allowed me to complete various assignments,” Philip said. “SBU helped me develop my talents through what I have learned and the ability to use what I’ve learned in the classroom.”
Philip appreciates the SBU faculty who guided him as he pursued his degree.
“The professors at SBU care about the students and do a good job at applying faith to their fields of study,” Philip said. “The faculty kept me motivated to stay on track to graduate. Personal relationships that I was able to build with the professors allowed me to enter the USMC.”
Getting involved in student activities like College Republicans, and working at the Meyer Wellness and Sports Center as a pool supervisor, was important to Philip, as was the opportunity to grow in his Christian walk.
“Bible studies on my (dorm) hall expanded my knowledge and understanding of the Word,” Philip said.
Philip acknowledges the value of his college experience at SBU was made possible through faith, academics and community.
“SBU is a good value because of the memories and knowledge that I walked away with,” Philip said. “SBU allows you to grow intellectually, spiritually and socially.
“I grew as a person because of the tight-knit community, and it has prepared me for the endeavors I have had to face in the Marine Corps.”
