For Meg Goodman, Southwest Baptist University provided the ideal environment for her
to refine her abilities and learn from excellent professors who took the time to get
to know her personally and support her throughout her education.
“At SBU you are at an advantage because it’s a small environment,” said Goodman, an Honors Program student who majored in accounting. “In my classes, especially upper-level classes, you really have a personal connection with professors. The environment really allows you to learn more and discuss more with other people.”
SBU also opened the door for her to pursue exciting opportunities such as an internship with the Washington, D.C.-based Heritage Foundation—which selects just one accounting intern each year, many of whom have been SBU students—and volunteering at the Republican National Convention.
“At the Republican National Convention, we learned about the presidency, the convention and the point behind it, and then we spent a week working the convention,” she said. “I don’t think I would have experienced that if my professor Dr. Allison Langford hadn’t known about it and helped me. I really appreciate her. She went above and beyond.”
After graduating in 2014, Meg became an associate at BKD CPAs & Advisors, one of the largest accounting and advisory firms in the U.S. She enjoys her position, for which she travels across the country doing audits and working with clients such as health-care systems. In the future, she hopes to further her education with either an MBA or a master’s degree in accountancy.
“Life-long learning is something that certainly is important to me,” she said. “I absolutely think SBU and the Honors Program helped prepare me for my future and the possibility of pursuing a graduate degree because the importance of critical thinking and research skills were emphasized.”
