For Kathryn Jespersen, her SBU experience was filled with growth and discovery.
Kathryn graduated with a degree in biology, and now is working toward her Ph.D. in anatomy and cell biology at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.
“SBU taught me the importance of finding a community in academia,” Kathryn said. “My professors were never just professors; they were real people with lives outside of school, and they saw me the same way.
“Fostering a love for the community at SBU only deepened my love for the learning that happened there.”
The support that Kathryn received from SBU faculty helped her discover her passions.
“SBU faculty went out of their way to open their homes and lives to me,” Kathryn said. “They challenged me to pursue what I love, not what is easy. They helped me learn so much about myself – where my passions lie, and how to pursue them both in, and apart, from a career.
“Several faculty, especially those in the Department of Biology, were instrumental in encouraging me to pursue graduate school. A few of them wrote references for me when I applied. I can honestly say I wouldn't be where I am today without their support and encouragement.”
Even with her heavy academic load, participating in music taught Kathryn even more.
“I was heavily involved in music for seven of my eight semesters at SBU,” Kathryn said. “I played in Wind Symphony for all seven and I sang in Community Choir for two of those. These activities took a lot of time that I didn't feel I had to spare, but they were worth investing in every time.
“Participating in music reminded me that learning is so much more than academics. Music taught me more about myself, about how I relate to God, and about how I relate to others. I wouldn't take back those hours of rehearsal for anything.”
The integration of faith, academics and relationships has a lasting impact, Kathryn says.
“SBU is a small school with a big impact,” Kathryn said. “It's not the end of an academic road; it's a gateway to the rest of your life. Change happens at SBU; people discover who they are and who they're meant to be, and it's amazing to witness.”
