One word that could be used to sum up Evan Johnson’s experience at Southwest Baptist
University is “growth” – as a student and scholar, as a leader, as a friend, and as
a Christian.
“The professors I had at SBU fostered an environment where it was easy for students
to be actively engaged in the learning process,” said Evan. “They encouraged us to
develop the skills to think critically and independently, which have been invaluable
to me both in law school and as a lawyer.”
After graduating from SBU in 2011 with a degree in political science, Evan went on
to graduate from the University of Virginia Law School. He now lives in Texas and
works as a corporate attorney.
“My professors have given me support, encouragement and advice, both in my time at
SBU and afterward, that has helped me immensely, both personally and professionally,”
Evan said.
Additionally, Evan’s time at SBU helped him develop leadership skills that have served
him well as he advances in his career.
“I had opportunities to be involved in several student activities including student
government, the debate team, and mission projects,” said Evan. “Aside from being a
lot of fun, student activities presented an opportunity to develop teamwork and leadership
skills in a friendly, supportive environment.”
Through these activities, Evan also developed lifelong friendships that continue to
help him grow socially and spiritually.
“Being surrounded by peers who were committed to spiritual development created a culture
on campus where it was easy to grow, find encouragement and ask the sorts of authentic
questions that lead to a more mature faith,” Evan said.
The growth Evan experienced at all levels through his time at SBU has made him an
advocate for the value of an SBU experience.
“SBU provides more than just an education; it provides an opportunity to grow intellectually,
socially and spiritually while surrounded by a community of people who are committed
to your success in each of those areas,” said Evan. “That sort of opportunity is incredibly
valuable and, in my experience, difficult to replicate anywhere else.”
