Amy Vitt '18

Amy Vitt, English alum

For Amy Vitt, an internship she completed while a student at SBU helped lead her to her new career.

Amy graduated with a degree in English and a minor in psychology, and now works as an editor with Hallmark Cards.

“I definitely learned the linguistic and editorial skills that I need for my job,” Amy said of her educational experience at SBU. “But, more importantly, I developed my ability to communicate and my confidence.”

The support Amy received from SBU faculty helped her navigate her path, and the small class sizes also were key.

“I had several professors who offered me emotional support when I had to make difficult decisions about my future,” Amy said. “Each of my professors took time to get to know me as an individual and meet me where I was at academically.

“SBU’s small class sizes and personable professors make it unique among colleges. I felt valued as a person, rather than just a number.”

During her time at SBU, getting involved in activities helped in Amy’s growth outside of the classroom and to prepare her for her future.

“I took several mission trips in college, which helped me to grow in my appreciation for other cultures and ways of life,” Amy said. “I was also involved in book club, which expanded my horizons from the comfort of home.

“I took part in the Honors Program, which was an incredible experience, and as a senior, mentored a freshman student. I know I will have the opportunity to mentor young employees in my job, and I appreciated being able to get a feel for it.”
