BOLIVAR, Mo. – The Southwest Baptist University Department of Music will present the Wind Symphony and University Band in concert at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 15, in Pike Auditorium on the Bolivar campus.
Both ensembles are under the direction of Dr. Brian Hopwood, professor of music and director of instrumental studies.
The University Band will perform works by composers Harold Bennett (a.k.a. Henry Fillmore), Rick Kirby, Johannes Brahms, Robert Jager and Frank Ticheli. Guest student conductors include senior music education majors Carie Parker, Cameron Collins, Austin Bryant, Austin Hicks and Chantel Biddinger.
The Wind Symphony’s performance is a tribute to Leonard Bernstein. “Bernstein at 100” is the world-wide celebration of the 100th birthday of Leonard Bernstein, the composer, conductor, educator, musician, cultural ambassador and humanitarian. “Overture to Candide,” “Make Our Garden Grow” (from Candide), “Four Dances” from “West Side Story” and “Slava!” are the Bernstein works included in the concert, along with the premiere performance of “Village Suite,” an original composition by senior music education major, Dylan Pich, who will conduct the work.
The performance is free and open to the public.
