SBU University Band joined by Bolivar Middle School 7th, 8th grade band in concert

The Southwest Baptist University Department of Music presents the University Band in concert at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 17, in Pike Auditorium on the SBU campus. The ensemble, under the direction of Dr. Brian K. Hopwood, will be joined by the Bolivar Middle School 7th and 8th grade band, conducted by Steve McClard and John Trew.

The performance opens with Clifton Williams’ “Dedicatory Overture,” written for the dedication of the new music building at the University of Evansville in Indiana in 1963. A set of Renaissance dances, “Fanfare, Ode and Festival,” arranged by Bob Margolis, will be performed along with “On a Hymnsong of Philip Bliss,” a classic work for concert band by David Holsinger that is based on the hymn “It is Well with My Soul.” Also included is a suite of old French songs, including “In the Forest of the King” by Pierre La Plante and John Philip Sousa’s “Fugue on Yankee Doodle.”

The performance is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Hopwood at (417) 328-1647 or bhopwood@SBUniv.edu.
