The Southwest Baptist University Theatre program concludes its 2015-2016 season with “The Servant of Two Masters,” written in the 1700s by Italian playwright Carlo Goldoni and translated and adapted by Jeffery Hatcher and Paolo Emilio Landi. The show will be presented at 7 p.m. April 21-23 in Davis-Newport Theater on the SBU campus.
Directed by assistant professor of theatre Dr. Bethany Wood, “The Servant of Two Masters” demonstrates the historic traditions of Commedia Dell'Arte, a form of Italian comedy utilizing slapstick humor and colorful characters, often donning theatrical masks and vibrant costumes.
"Commedia gives our students a chance to experiment and play with physical comedy and broad acting skills,” Wood said. “The result is a hilarious and fun show concluding the SBU Theatre season."
The story deals with love and mistaken identities as it focuses on a wily servant and his clever scheme to double his pay by serving two masters at once.
Please note that Commedia Dell'Arte sometimes includes scenes with occasional language and innuendo that some families may determine is not suitable for younger audiences.
Tickets are $8 for general admission, $5 for SBU alumni, senior citizens, and other students, and $3 for SBU students and children up to 13 years old. Tickets may be purchased at the Box Office inside the Jester Learning and Performance Center, over the phone at (417) 328-1691, or online at www.SBUniv.edu/theatre.
