BOLIVAR, Mo. — The Southwest Baptist University Opera Workshop will present the Fall Opera Scenes at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 15, in the Davis-Newport Theatre of the Jester Learning and Performance Center on the Bolivar campus.
The evening’s performance, conducted by Dr. Andrew Campbell, assistant professor of music, will feature 17 SBU music students in a variety of excerpts from well-known operas, including Johann Strauss’ “Die Fledermaus,” Mozart’s “The Magic Flute” and Menotti’s “The Old Maid and the Thief.”
In addition, Dr. Robin Smith, assistant professor of music, will join her student, Chantel Biddinger of Lebanon, on the beautiful duet “Barcarolle” from “The Tales of Hoffmann.” An unusual gem will be the spinning scene from “Sleeping Beauty,” Ottorino Respighi’s beautiful opera originally composed for puppet theatre, as well as “Glitter and Be Gay” from Leonard Bernstein’s “Candide.”
Rounding out the performance, which is free and open to the public, will be a scene from the children’s opera “The Billy Goats Gruff.”
SBU students participating in the show include Buelah Buzard, Joel Walley, Daniel Lewis, Nathan Murfin, Seth Walley, Emily Jaynes, Christian Jaynes, Lucy Mayfield, Allison Leiker, Kathrine Pemberton, Ashley Fox, Austin Bryant, Melody Dixon, Karen Kelley and Zephan McGlasson.
The Opera Workshop is an auditioned solo ensemble class directed by Jane Munson-Berg, assistant professor of music. Music for the Nov. 15 performance will be provided by David Giles and student pianist Hannah Mulberry.
