SBU Jazz Ensemble in concert on Nov. 3

BOLIVAR, Mo. — The Southwest Baptist University Jazz Ensemble will be featured in concert at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 3, in Pike Auditorium on the Bolivar campus.

The program, which is free and open to the public, will be anchored by tunes from the rich heritage of jazz standards and American song: “Tickletoe,” “And the Band Played On,” “The Theme,” and George Gershwin’s “Embraceable You.” The concert will also branch out into more contemporary tunes, including Gordon Goodwin’s “Told Ya So,” and Mike Dana’s “Late in the Quarter,” along with “Salt City Samba,” a new work by Andrew Neu, which rounds out the program with Brazilian-influenced contemporary jazz.

Under the direction of Dr. Jeffery L. Waters, dean of the College of Music, Arts and Letters, the 17-piece Jazz Ensemble is the premier ensemble on campus dedicated to the exclusive study of jazz music and will feature SBU student performers in a program which includes a variety of styles associated with the big-band jazz ensemble.
