SBU faculty saxophone recital on Sept. 18 to feature Waters

Dr. Jeffrey Waters will present a saxophone recital on Sept. 18.BOLIVAR, Mo. – The Southwest Baptist University Department of Music will present a faculty saxophone recital at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 18, in Meyer Recital Hall of Casebolt Music Center on the Bolivar campus.

Dr. Jeffrey Waters, professor of music and dean of the Geneva Casebolt College of Music, Arts and Letters at SBU, is in his 30th year on the SBU music faculty.

The program will feature four diverse works for the alto saxophone by composers Maurice Whitney, Don Freund, J.S. Bach and Jacques Ibert. Waters will be accompanied by Dr. Melinda Jones, professor of music, on piano. He also will be joined by 11 professional colleagues on wind and string instruments on Ibert’s “Concertino da Camera,” one of the most celebrated solo works for saxophone from the mid-20th century.

“It’s a special treat for me, and I hope, the audience to experience the Ibert ‘Concertino’ in its original format, which calls for the 11-piece instrumental ensemble accompaniment,” Waters said. “It is an exciting and virtuosic work, and this will be the first time I have had an opportunity to perform it in this format.”

The program will open with Whitney’s “Rumba,” which will be followed by Freund’s fresh and erratic “Sky Scrapings,” written for acclaimed saxophonist Eugene Rousseau in 1997. A transcription for saxophone of Bach’s “Sonata in E Major,” originally for flute, will pay homage to the great Baroque composer. Ibert’s “Concertino” will be the finale.

For more information about the recital, which is free and open to the public, please contact the SBU Music Office at (417) 328-1644.
