BOLIVAR, Mo. – The Chorale of Southwest Baptist University will be in concert at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 26, at First Baptist Church of Bolivar.
Under the direction of Dr. Jim Tarrant, professor of music and director of choral studies at SBU, the Chorale will present “Requiem” by Maurice Duruflé. The program features contributions from Vicky Claborne on organ; Traci Pritchard and Andrew Bryant, soloists.
Duruflé’s opus 9 is considered the most-important Requiem settings of the 20th Century. The work melds the bedrock of western sacred music, Gregorian chant, with the harmonic revolution of the 1900s. Unlike the operatic settings of the Romantic era, this Requiem focuses on light and life, perpetual and brilliant. It is easily one of the most-challenging accompaniments for organ.
As the premiere choral ensemble of the University, the Chorale performs each Fall across the tri-state area. The Chorale was honored to perform at the 2019 Missouri Music Educators Association meeting in January in Osage Beach, Mo. The ensemble returns to Europe in May 2020 for a performance tour from Vienna to Venice.
