SBU Chamber Singers to perform in racquetball courts

Duplicate concerts given at 6:30 and 7:45 p.m.

BOLIVAR, Mo. – The Chamber Singers of Southwest Baptist University will present a concert of early choral music on Thursday, April 5, in the racquetball courts of the Meyer Wellness Center on the Bolivar campus.

Duplicate concerts will be given at 6:30 and 7:45 p.m., and seating is limited. There is no admission charge, but patrons will need to make reservations by calling the music office at (417) 328-1644.

The program will feature music from church chant to the High Renaissance. The repertoire will include works from familiar composers such as Josquin, Palestrina and Gesualdo, as well as lesser-known composers including Peñalosa, Dufay, and de Vitry.

“The racquetball courts offer an auditory experience close to the stone abbeys and cathedrals of that age,” said Dr. Jim Tarrant, director of choral studies at SBU. “The acoustics are quite beneficial to the singers in terms of achieving blend, pitch, and balance. For the audience, it is quite a remarkable sensation to be completely immersed in the sound.”

The concert also will include a multi-media component.

The Chamber Singers specialize in music for the small choral ensemble and present the annual “Ye Olde Madrigal Dinners.”
