Southwest Baptist University is saddened to announce the passing of Dr. Joe Shelton,
a cherished professor, mentor, and Bearcat Hall of Fame inductee, who died on Monday,
June 2, 2025.
Dr. Shelton's journey with SBU began in 1956 after serving 16 months in Korea. He played basketball for the Bearcats from 1956 to 1958 under Coach Chester Elmore, earning the Life Beautiful student award in 1958. Although offered a scholarship to play at Ouachita Baptist, he chose to focus on his education and support his new family. He earned his master's degree from the University of Missouri and a doctorate from the University of Arkansas. In 1972, he joined SBU's psychology department, becoming chairman in his second year and later leading the behavioral science department until his retirement in 1995.
Beyond academics, Dr. Shelton and his wife, Donna, were devoted supporters of SBU athletics, attending every football and basketball game, home or away, for over 13 years.
"Dr. Shelton left an incredible legacy at SBU in the lives of his students, his peers, and the local community, and he will be greatly missed," said Dr. Rick Melson, President at SBU. "I'm thankful to have known Joe and am grateful for his many, many years of selfless service to the Bearcat family."
In recognition of his significant service to the university and its athletics programs, Dr. Shelton was inducted into the SBU Athletics Hall of Fame in 2016. In addition, he was a community leader as a founding board member for Citizens Memorial Hospital (CMH) in Bolivar and an active member at First Baptist Church. He will be deeply missed by students, colleagues, and all who knew him.
A visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Monday, June 9, at First Baptist Church in Bolivar, with a service scheduled for 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 10, also at First Baptist.
