SBU Mathematics Professor Emeritus speaks on the use of Artificial Intelligence to Math and Science Educators

photo of SBU campus and fountainDr. Kevin Hopkins, Southwest Baptist University mathematics professor emeritus, recently gave three presentations on the use of generative Artificial Intelligence in Math and Science Education.  His first two presentations were titled “What is AI?” and were given at Interface 2024 on September 28 and October 1.  “The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education’s Interface is designed for all math and science educators interested in quality professional learning. “.

His talk description was, “AI is in the news a lot these days. As math and science educators, you may be interested in learning more but have no idea where to start. This session will look at four different chat programs: ChatGPT, ClaudeAI, Microsoft Copilot, and Google Gemini. The speaker will demonstrate how to interact with the chat programs by constructing prompts that could be of use to an educator. Some of these possible uses are building a course outline, preparing a lesson plan, building a slide presentation, suggesting assessment questions, constructing assessment rubrics, modifying comprehension level, and providing helpful analogies.”

His biography given at the Interface site reads, “Dr. Kevin W. Hopkins is a seasoned educator and Senior Training Specialist at Next Level Solutions, with a rich teaching history at Southwest Baptist University from 1989 to 2021. Throughout his career, Dr. Hopkins has delivered over 60 presentations at various educational and technology conferences, focusing on the innovative use of GeoGebra software and interactive educational games in mathematics teaching. His work significantly enhances student engagement and understanding, making substantial contributions to the field of mathematics education.”

His final presentation was titled “Unlock the Power of AI in Your Math Classroom” and was given via a Zoom Webinar for the Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics on October 2.  That presentation is available for viewing at https://youtu.be/OPA0wPNTrw4.
