Southwest Baptist University Announces 2024 Life Beautiful Award Winners

Southwest Baptist University is proud to announce the 2024 recipients of the Life Beautiful Award, the highest honor bestowed upon faculty and staff members who exemplify Christ-like behavior, actively engage in their church and community, strive for excellence in their work, and selflessly serve others through their roles at SBU.

Recipients must have faithfully served the University for at least four years and are nominated by their peers within the SBU community. A committee of faculty and staff members selects the winners. This year’s honorees are Dr. Sarah Howes, recipient of the Faculty Life Beautiful Award, and Penny Marr, recipient of the Staff Life Beautiful Award.

Dr. Sarah Howes, an accomplished soprano and beloved professor, is in her sixth year at SBU. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Music from the University of Minnesota (2002), a Master of Music in Vocal Performance and Literature from the Eastman School of Music of the University of Rochester (2005), and a Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Minnesota (2019). Dr. Howes has performed in a variety of productions, including the “East Wing Songs Volume III” inspired by America’s First Ladies, opera performances, and SBU’s Masterworks series.

In addition to her musical accomplishments, Dr. Howes has demonstrated unwavering dedication to her students and colleagues. She has taken on additional roles at SBU, including directing theatre productions for the past two years and serving as Director of Choral Activities this year. Her commitment to building strong relationships across campus and her willingness to go above and beyond exemplify her Christ-like character.

Dr. Howes and her husband, Dave, are active members of First Baptist Church of Bolivar, where they worship with their children, Emma and Emmit. Her colleagues praise her as a kind, caring advocate for students and a gifted leader. One colleague shared, “Sarah is an absolute pleasure to work alongside. Not only is she one of the most musically talented people I’ve ever met, but she is also a kind, caring advocate for our students, a beloved professor, and a gifted leader. She is a true asset to SBU and perfectly represents what it is to live a Life Beautiful.”

A native of Rolla, Missouri, Penny met her husband, Bill, nearly 48 years ago. Bill recently retired from SBU after serving in the DPT program and as a Business instructor. Together, they have four children and seven grandchildren. The Marrs live in Bolivar, where they share a passion for music and community involvement, as well as raising 120 goats. They attend Life Church in Bolivar and have been active in various ministries, including youth ministry and worship teams.
