BOLIVAR, Mo. – The Southwest Baptist University Division of Arts and Humanities will present the Wind Symphony in concert at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 15 in Pike Auditorium on the Bolivar campus.
Under the direction of Jared Brown, the Wind Symphony will feature compositions spanning more than a century of wind band literature.
“Second Suite in F,” a staple of band literature, opens the concert, and is a lush setting of the folk tune “All the Pretty Little Horses.” “Lightning Field” is an energetic work that takes its name from an expansive work of art by Walter de Maria. The dramatic tone poem, “They Shall Run and Be Free,” follows with a musical depiction of a daring journey of the Underground Railroad. Midwest composer Dana Wilson’s “Colorado Peaks,” with its relentless pulse and syncopation, suggests the rugged and persistent climb up a mountain.
The final number, “Famishius Fantasticus” by Michael Markowski is intended to be a concert closer, or a “That’s All Folks!,” honoring the 100th birthday of the late Looney Tunes director Chuck Jones.
The performance is free and open to the public.
