BOLIVAR, Mo. – Southwest Baptist University is kicking off the Fall 2022 semester with a new degree
program offering – software engineering.
"We are excited to provide a program that responds to the high demand for competent software engineers. Our Software Engineering program is designed to provide an excellent foundation for careers in full-stack software development, software architecture, testing, and other software engineering roles,” said Dr. Amos Gichamba, division head of computing and mathematics.
The software engineering degree will prepare students for a career in software development and information processing, including that related to the field of big data.
Gichamba stated, “This program builds upon our existing computing degrees, which have experienced tremendous success, as shown by our high job placement rates upon graduation." SBU has been a leader in computer science education since 1983. Graduates from computing programs, including computer science, computer information science, cybersecurity, and web systems and design have achieved a 98% historical 90-day job placement rate.
SBU’s software engineering degree focuses on software engineering principles, with an emphasis on software architecture design, software development process, implementation, testing and maintenance. This degree program was designed with the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) accreditation requirements in mind. SBU’s new software engineering degree is poised to receive accreditation status from ABET when the program produces its first graduate. SBU would be only the third institution in the region to have an ABET-accredited software engineering program.
The software engineering degree will include a required internship to provide an opportunity for students to participate in real-world software development and problem-solving. This degree program is tailored to respond to the great need for competent, well-rounded software engineers.
