SBU Theatre presents “Into the Woods”

Into the Woods Cast RehersalSouthwest Baptist University Theatre will present “Into the Woods” at 7 p.m., November 10-12, and 2 p.m., November 13, in the Davis-Newport Theater on the SBU-Bolivar campus.

James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim take popular storybook characters and bring them together for a Tony Award-winning musical, “Into the Woods.” This modern classic is a show the whole family can enjoy. The show explores the concept of the “rights and wrongs and in-betweens of life and the deep impact that our decisions have on those around us.”

“With themes of community and selflessness, ‘Into the Woods’ is best framed for our audience in terms of Americana — those familiar and nostalgic bits of life in America,” said Jonathan Wehmeyer, assistant professor of theatre and the show’s director. “However, since this is also the story of fairytale characters, it is important that we maintain clear connections visually to fairytales. Therefore, the concept we will be embracing for our production is Fairytale Americana, which represents an idyllic and nostalgic view of American culture and pop culture. It does not represent patriotism, flags, religion, etc. It is a show about culture and community.”

Tickets are on sale and can be purchased in-person at the Box Office (located inside the Jester Learning and Performance Center), online at SBUniv.edu/theatre, or by calling (417) 328-1691.
