BOLIVAR, Mo. – The music area of Southwest Baptist University will present its annual Masterworks concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 30, on John Q. Hammons Court in the Meyer Wellness and Sports Center on the Bolivar campus.
The Masterworks Orchestra and Chorus will present the choral suite, “The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace,” by Sir Karl Jenkins. The program also will include works by Max Richter, Bruce Broughton and Ennio Morricone.
“This program is significant on many levels because of the formidable influence composers like these are having on contemporary culture,” said Dr. James R. Tarrant, director of choral studies and professor of music at SBU who has conducted the Masterworks concert the past 17 years. “The Mass itself has been performed more than 3,000 times since its debut in 2000.”
For more than 50 years, SBU has presented the Masterworks concert to grant southwest Missouri the experience of musical works best presented by the combined efforts of discipline area, university and community. The repertoire has included great classics, unfamiliar pearls and modern compositions of significance.
The concert is free and open to the public. To allow for greater and appropriate social distancing, the concert will be held on John Q. Hammons Court in the wellness center. Patrons are expected to be masked at all times. For more information, contact the music area at (417) 328-1644.
