BOLIVAR, Mo. – Southwest Baptist University’s Dr. Bob Glasgow, professor of mathematics,
presented at the Missouri Council of Teachers of Mathematics (MCTM) annual meeting
on Dec. 4 in Columbia.
Glasgow, the 2019 MCTM Leroy Sachs Award recipient for lifetime achievement, presented “Using Visual and Physical Representations of Statistical Measures Prior to Formulas,” which explored simple ways for students to explore statistical measures using hands-on techniques.
“Middle school students need to see and experience statistical measures before being given formulas,” said Glasgow, whose presentation was well-attended and well-received.
“I’ve been developing ways for middle school teachers to teach the new statistics standards in the Missouri Learning Standards, since I served on the work group that wrote the standards in 2015,” Glasgow said. “I’ve presented on this many times in different state and national venues. I was scheduled to do this presentation at the National NCTM conference last year, but COVID ended that, so I presented it at our state conference.”
