BOLIVAR, Mo. – The Chorale of Southwest Baptist University will be in concert at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 24, at First Baptist Church of Bolivar.
Under the direction of Dr. James R. Tarrant, professor of music and director of choral studies at SBU, the Chorale will present a full program of sacred anthems, presented in a variety of accompaniments and a cappella settings. Assisting in the concert will be Dr. William Brown (organ), Dr. Jeffrey Waters (oboe) and Kristin Gram (harp).
“The chorus and organ works include anthems by Philip E. Baker, Sidney Campbell and William Mathias, all known for their contributions to high liturgical worship music,” Tarrant said. “The pieces stretch the abilities of both the singers and the organist.”
Other works on the program include movements from John Rutter’s “Requiem” and Dan Forrest’s “Te Deum.” To complete the program, the Chorale will perform a cappella pieces that have become established in the repertoire of Protestant music.
“It is a concert of joy, reverence and contemplation,” Tarrant said.
The concert also will honor Mark W. Lawson, owner and president of ECS Publishing. Lawson ’79 was named the SBU Music Department’s Alum of the Year this past fall and recently received an honorary doctorate from SBU. Lawson is responsible for the publication development, strategic focus and management of E.C. Schirmer Music Company, Galaxy Music Corporation, MorningStar Music Publishers and ARSIS Audio. ECS Publishing Group is an influential presence in music publishing across the country and the world.
As the premiere choral ensemble of the University, the Chorale performs each fall across the tri-state area. The Chorale performed at the 2019 Missouri Music Educators Association meeting in January in Osage Beach, Mo. The ensemble is comprised of music majors and non-music majors selected through competitive audition each semester.
