Comic and Gaming Expo


Horizons Project (student content creation program) and the Southwest Baptist University Libraries are partnering together to host the 2018 Southwest Coming and Gaming Expo!

This fun, family-friendly event will involve activities across the SBU campus including trivia games, cosplay contest, esports expert guest speakers, and more. An event highlight will be the first-ever middle school and high school Fortnite tournament. Read below for more information.

Event Details

  • What: Comic and Gaming Expo
  • Who: Area youth, SBU students, community members and families
  • When: Saturday, April 21, 2018, Noon-6 p.m.
  • WhereSBU Campus; comic and tabletop gaming expo will be held in the Library and esports expo will be held in Taylor Center
  • Cost: $1 admission (free for kids aged 6 and under) for events in library; esports expo and Fortnite tournament are FREE for all to attend

Comic and Tabletop Gaming Expo Highlights

  • Guest speaker: J. Christopher Wilson, elementary school teacher and writer of "The Wards of Iasos" will present on "Should Kids Read Comics?" Come learn about the benefits of reading comics and how Wilson uses comics in education.
  • Guest speaker: Author Marc Allie will discuss his latest book in his presentation, "The Thing from the Drive-In: Behind the Scenes."

  • Special Guest Speaker: Pete Vlastelica, CEO of MLG (an Activision Blizzard company), will present about the Overwatch league and how professional gaming has changed in recent years.
  • Remote Guest Speaker: Steve Arhancet, Co-CEO and Owner of Team Liquid
  • LIVE Overwatch League watch party at 7 p.m. in Student Union

FortNite Tournament

Area middle school and high school students are invited to participate in the first-ever youth Fortnite Tournament! All players will compete in a survival format where points are awarded for placement and eliminations. The top 48 players will advance to the finals. Middle school students will compete for in-game currency given in the form of a $25 Visa gift card. The winner of the high school division will receive a $400 scholarship to SBU! Fortnite tournament sign-up begins at 11 a.m.
