The SBU 2011 Homecoming was October 28 and 29. We hope you were able to attend; The food and fellowship were situated at a center of activity along the Homecoming parade route between Beasley and Leslie Halls on Saturday morning at 9:30 AM.

Department of Christian Ministry
Dr. Kelly Malone served as camp missionary for the Mid-Lakes Baptist Association Children's camp, July 31-August 3.
Dr. Jim Frost has been appointed to the executive committee of the national organization, University Educators for Global Engagement. In May, Frost attended FOCUS training in Kansas for more than 100 students going into cross-culural ministry this summer.
We have six students currently involved in the ICS Semester Abroad. They are studying in Central Asia, South Asia, and southern Africa. To this point SBU has sent 94 students on this six-month cross-cultural internship.
Dr. Michael Fuhrman, Director of In-Service Training, has been active preaching in area churches throughout the summer. In addition, he delivered the Coble-Morton Lectures at the Northgate Baptist Church, Kansas City, and attended the annual meeting of the Association of Ministry Guidance Professionals, San Antonio, Texas. Dr. Fuhrman was installed as Robert and Ruth Powell Professor of Preaching during formal convocation this year.
Dr. Duke Jones was the Junior High Camp Pastor for the Fellowship Baptist Association last summer. He also served as the Children's Camp Pastor and the Junior High Camp Pastor for the Ozark Prairie Baptist Association in July.
Department of Theology
In February, Dr. Clint Bass responded to a paper given by Matthew Pinson at the Baptist Center for Theology and Ministry (New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary). The published response is forthcoming in the Journal for Baptist Theology and Ministry.Dr. Bing Bayer visited Ephesus, Hierapolis, and other biblical sites in Turkey last summer. He also went to San Salvador with a construction team from FBC, Bolivar, and helped build a church building. Dr. Bayer recently preached at the FBC of Cassville, the Union Mount Baptist Church, Elkland, and the Windermere Baptist Encampment.
Dr. Zach Manis gave a poster presentation at the Fall Faculty Workshop over his paper "Kierkegaard and Evans on the Problem of Abraham," which he presented last October at the American Academy of Religion (AAR) annual meeting in Atlanta. The full version of the paper appeared in the August volume of Journal of Religious Ethics. His review of M. Jamie Ferreira's book, Kierkegaard (Wiley-Blackwell Press, 2009), will appear in the upcoming volume of Journal of Moral Philosophy. He is currently leading a small group discussion of C.S. Lewis's Mere Christianity as a part of the new Community Life and Worship (CLW) program.
Dr. Rodney Reeves recently finished an article, "The Last Shall Be First: Reversal as a Theme in Luke" for the Biblical Illustrator. His book, Spirituality According to Paul: Imitating the Apostle of Christ (InterVarsity Press) is planned for release the beginning of November. He led a retreat (with Jeffrey Overstreet) last summer on the subject "Word and Image: Experiencing the Glory of God in Story," at the Laity Lodge, Leakey, TX. He also spoke during worship services at Glendale Baptist, Springfield, FBC, Cassville, and FBC, Forsyth. He recently spoke furing a conference on Missions at Freshwater Church, Bolivar.

Dr. Michael Fuhrman, Director of In-Service Training, attended the Central States Regional Meeting of the Society of Biblical Literature in St. Louis, Missouri on March 21-22. In addition Dr. Fuhrman taught the Winter Bible Study on Galatians for the First Southern Baptist Church of Stockton. He has preached at the First Baptist Church of Lamar and has spoken several times at the First Baptist Church of Appleton City.
Dr. Kelly Malone presented a paper, "City Church in the New Testament and Some Implications for Contemporary Missions," during the North Central Regional Meeting of the Evangelical Missiological Society, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, Deerfield, IL, February 26, 2011. He also presented a paper, "Kingdom of God in Missions: Changing Perspectives in Evangelical Thought," during the National Conference of University Educators for Global Engagement, International Mission Board International Learning Center, Richmond, VA, April 7-10. Dr. Malone also served as a sponsor on a mission trip with middle school students from First Baptist Church, Bolivar, to St. Louis, March 22-25, 2011, where they carried out various ministries in inner-city St. Louis including ministry with the homeless, unwed mothers and the elderly.
Department of Theology
Dr. Don Denton identified and recruited the first group of student inductees into our local chapter of Theta Alpha Kappa, the national honor society in religious studies and theology. The chapter was chartered in Spring 2008; the induction ceremony for these students was held the first week of April, after which they began holding meetings to plan activities for the next acadedmic year.
Dr. Bing Bayer attended the Central States Regional Meeting of the Society of Biblical Literature in St. Louis, MO. He also preached at Union Mound Baptist Church.
In March Dr. Rodney Reeves attended the Southwest Commission on Religious Studies and served as the convener of the regional meeting of the Institute for Biblical Research, Dallas, TX. He spoke on the topic of "Spiritual Awakening in the Church" during worship services at Springhill Baptist Church, and also spoke at Glendate Baptist Church. He also finished an article for the Biblical Illustrator, entitled "The Last Shall Be First: Reversal as a Theme in Luke."
