Meet Whitney Baker
Major: Public Relations | Minor: Spanish
Class of 2010
How does college differ from high school? What helped you adjust to college life?
At college you have the ability to build stronger relationships with your peers and your professors. You invest in their lives and they invest in yours. Having those new relationships as well as keeping in contact with family and friends helped me adjust to the new experience as a college student.
Can you describe the classroom environment? What has the coursework been like in your classes?
The class sizes are small, yet the dialogue is intense. The classroom is a comfortable atmosphere encouraging growth academically and spiritually. I have had the ability to learn from my classmates and professors, gaining a wider perspective in many areas of life.
What do you think about the faculty, staff, and advisors? What are the students like at SBU?
I appreciate the support I have received from faculty and fellow students at SBU. I have valued my communication courses and I respect the professors in the Communication Department for being challenging as well as compassionate. I have obtained life lessons and practical skills in the classroom, in the athletic realm, and in social settings from my professors, coaches, and friends at SBU.
Do you participate in any activities or organizations?
I have been involved in both SBU volleyball and SBU track and field. I am a representative on the SAAC (Student Athlete Advisory Committee). I am also an SBU Ambassador. I have traveled to Panama to study and do mission work with the Spanish Department. I will also be studying abroad in Costa Rica during the spring of my senior year (2010).
Have you had any internships or co-ops?
I did an internship with the Executive Director of the Lake Area Chamber of Commerce (Summer 09). I had the ability to assist in event planning and various communications and marketing tasks at the Chamber. Because of this internship, I have accumulated realistic work experience and knowledge. I know I am better prepared for a job because of this opportunity.
Why should other students select SBU?
If you are ready to make an impact in a place where Christ is the center, academics are strongly valued and you as an individual are genuinely cared for, then SBU is the place for you.
Do you have any advice for future students?
SBU offers many occasions to get involved in a variety of areas. I encourage future Bearcats to engage in those opportunities and give of your selves. I have realized that God teaches me so much when I am sacrificing myself for the good of others. Don’t miss out on the great things He has in store for you!
