Meet Kara Rogers, '11

What helped you adjust to college life?

Welcome Week helped me adjust to college life. It made a smooth transition into college and helped me meet people who I still talk to and hang with today. Dorm life helped me adjust to college. I became very close with the girls on my hall and my R.A. as well. The fact that my older brother attends SBU and had been here a year before me really helped. I was able to meet people and see a familiar face from the very beginning.

What has the coursework been like in your classes?

My freshman year I didn’t struggle because I took all general education classes. I came from a college prep high school which made a huge difference. However, this semester I am in classes required for my major, which are more of a challenge. For example, my anatomy and physiology class requires a lot of my time because of the labs. Although classes have been more of challenge, I have really enjoyed them.

What do you think about the faculty, staff, and advisors?

To be honest, the faculty is one of the main reasons why I love SBU. From the beginning, my professors were very personable and interested in me as a person. I get help from my physics teacher weekly and after we‘re done discussing physics, we usually just sit and talk for another 15 to 20 minutes.

Do you participate in any activities or organizations?

Last year, I got involved in discipleship, which is an organization designed for the girls on campus to be put into small accountability groups. My group in particular consists of girls who have lived overseas for part of their lives. We have helped each other adjust to living back in America.

What are your plans after graduation?

I plan to go back to school and get my doctorate degree in physical therapy here at SBU, or I’ll go on to medical school somewhere in the U.S.
