Meet Holly Hackathorn

Major:
Elementary Education, Class of 2010

Why did you choose SBU? What had the biggest impact on your decision?
I chose SBU because of the great reputation it held and continues to hold in my family. Several members of my family are alumni of SBU and thoroughly enjoyed their time at SBU. I was told SBU was not only a place to receive an outstanding education but also a place where I would develop lifelong friendships and  the opportunity to grow in my relationship with Christ.

How does college differ from high school? What helped you adjust to college life?
College brings a lot more responsibility and freedom compared to life in high school.  Classes are more rigorous and require more time to devote to studying. Living away from your parents is also a huge change for most but allows you to become more independent. Friendships that I developed early on in college helped me to enjoy and adjust to college life. Getting involved in activities and organizations on campus helped to connect with people and build relationships with others on campus.

Can you describe the classroom environment? What has the coursework been like in your classes?
Professors at SBU are very caring people. I always felt like they not only cared about me as a student but also as an individual. They make going to classes meaningful and enjoyable. Many open the class in prayer and take prayer requests from students aloud. Professors are always willing to go above and beyond to help students and make themselves available for you. The coursework is not easy, I have been challenged countless times in my classes.  I know I am prepared for my career because of the professors who set the bar high and expected much of me.

Do you participate in any activities or organizations?
I was involved as a participate and co-chair of SBU’s Relay For Life.

Have you had any internships or co-ops?
During my undergraduate education I had many opportunities that prepared me for a career in education. I spent several semesters observing and assisting in preschools and various elementary classrooms as part of my field experience for my major.  The time spent at these various locations was so valuable and essential in my success as a student teacher in my last semester of my undergrad work at SBU.

Are there any campus traditions that make SBU unique?
Homecoming is always a campus tradition that students look forward to and makes SBU unique. The activities throughout the week were always fun to participate in with your dorm and friends.

What do you like best about SBU?
I love the Christ-like environment at SBU. This is a place where people really do care about you and want you to succeed. The desire students, faculty and staff members have to follow Christ and make an impact in the world for His kingdom is contagious.

What are your plans after graduation?
After graduating with my undergraduate degree I began my Masters of Education at SBU. I am currently working as a graduate assistant at SBU. I hope to begin my teaching career in the near future teaching kindergarten, first or second grade.

Why should other students select SBU?
SBU is a place you will be challenged and encouraged not only academically but also spiritually. Students should choose SBU because it is truly a unique and amazing opportunity to not only receive an outstanding college education but also a community of believers to be encouraged by.
