“I love to write. It’s the way I express myself and connect with others. I write short stories. I’m a journalist for the student newspaper and a contributing writer for SBU Life, our University’s magazine. I maintain my own blog. Being involved in the new Writing major at SBU, my horizons as a writer have been expanded. I used to laugh at the idea of being a poet and never even thought I could write a play, but these professors have ignited in me a passion for both. I can’t get enough of poetry even though I’m not sure how good I am at interpreting or writing it. I revel in the idea of my characters coming to life on a stage. I hope to use this passion to tell the world the stories Christ gives me to share. As long as I’m alive, I will be writing.
I am a grammar nerd. There, I admitted it. I love diagramming sentences. I guess that would explain why I loved my Structures of the English Language class and tutored in the Writing Center for two years. I’m also Managing Editor at our University newspaper, and before that, I was the Feature editor. I really enjoy a well-constructed sentence. My love of grammar and my newfound interest in marketing (sparked by classes like Creative Advertising and my Marketing internship) have led me to discover my career path; I would love to be a book editor. I can’t wait to get my hands on a raw and mangled manuscript and polish it for your reading pleasure.
I grew up in a non-conventional way. For 19 years of my 21 years, my dad was a Marine. So for 19 years, I was moved around about every five years to a new home and new school where I had to make new friends. I lived in South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, California, and Japan before coming to SBU. While I lived in Japan for five years, I was able to visit many famous cities in Japan as well as China, South Korea, and Australia. This life has instilled in me a passion to see the rest of the world. When I came to SBU, I traveled to Brazil and Utah on SBU mission trips. I hope soon to revisit Australia (my favorite country so far) and also tour Europe.
I love to talk. One of my favorite things to do to is go out to eat or to a coffeehouse with my friends and talk.
Too many Communications classes have turned me into somewhat of a political activist. I love following presidential candidate races and rooting for my candidate of choice. I strongly believe in the power of the vote and feel that everyone should register and vote as much as they can. I also believe that voters should stay informed so they can make the most educated decisions possible. I love talking to anyone about politics as long as it’s a respectful discussion.”
