I have always given my home phone number to my students and encouraged them to call if they run into difficulty completing some work I have assigned. Frequently I will receive emails that begin with ‘I’m up in the lab. Do you have a few minutes to help…?’ New students are sometimes surprised that I will walk in the lab door within a few minutes of receiving their message.
