Department of Biblical Studies
The Courts Redford College of Theology and Ministry will endeavor from a Christian perspective to teach you the Bible, our Christian heritage, and spiritual formation, and to prepare you for professional church vocations.
Courses in the department of Biblical studies will provide you with a deeper understanding and appreciation for the Bible. Courses in Greek and Hebrew will lay the essential linguistic foundations for you to teach and proclaim the Bible as well as teach the language skills necessary to a liberal arts program.
Courses in church history, philosophy and theology will equip you to gain insight into philosophical problems and representative systems of thought, to understand important doctrines of the Christian faith and to understand the development, expansion and historical impact of Christianity.

- Emphasis is placed on integrating classroom activities with practical experience. A mentoring system (consisting of apprenticeships) has been established to allow you to learn from those who are currently serving in ministry positions. Through these apprenticeships, you will be involved in churches and other organizations in the local area to gain practical experiences in your chosen fields.
- You will have numerous opportunities to gain ministry experience in local churches.

The Intercultural Studies (ICS) program at SBU prepares you to answer the call to reach every nation, tribe and tongue through spiritual, academic and practical preparation. As an ICS major you must have a personal commitment to Christian discipleship and cross-cultural evangelism.

Did you know?
- In 2003 SBU introduced the innovative Intercultural Studies (ICS) major, which prepares you for the mission field. In addition to your major course of study, ICS students are required to take courses to learn a market skill, such as health care, teaching English as a second language, computer science or social work.
- ICS students are required to participate in a semester of study abroad, which incorporates your immersion into the local culture with practical ministry experience within an un-reached people group.
- As an ICS student you will learn how to communicate the biblical message cross-culturally, and you will be prepared to serve in at least four distinct areas of service: overseas cross-cultural service, international secular platforms, state-side service to ethnic minorities, mobilizing ministries to recruit, and training others to serve cross-culturally.
