BOLIVAR, MO – Southwest Baptist University student Collin Christensen has been selected as one of 18 students from across the United States to attend the Advanced Statistical Training in Psychology (ASTP) at the University of Maryland July 12-20.
Christensen, a junior psychology major from Wagoner, Okla., was selected from a pool of 60 qualified students. Applicants had to submit two recommendations, which Christensen obtained from Dr. Shelley Kilpatrick, SBU associate professor of psychology, and Chris Dinwiddie, SBU instructor of psychology. He also had to submit an official transcript and application. Applicants must be college students who will be seniors during the 2008-2009 academic year, have firm plans to attend a graduate program in psychology after college, and plan to pursue careers in research.
The ASTP program is designed to help undergraduates who plan to pursue advanced degrees in psychological research. During this nine-day seminar, presented by the American Psychological Association, students will learn about psychological statistics and research methods in a setting that emphasizes the hands-on skills necessary to analyze and interpret real data. The instruction will be geared toward the use of computer-assisted statistical packages and be co-taught by Dr. Brett Pelham, Dr. Keith Maddox and Dr. Mauricio Carvallo, award-winning instructors who have each taught graduate statistics or research methods at major research universities.
