BOLIVAR, MO – Southwest Baptist University Music Department presents the Symphonic Winds in concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19. Works by Mendelssohn, Biebl, Shostakovich, and Reed are featured by the 54-member ensemble. The free public performance will be held at Pike Auditorium in the Mabee Chapel on the SBU campus in Bolivar.

“This performance represents a varied library of wind band music with two large masterworks as the bookends,” said Dr. Brian Hopwood, conductor and director of instrumental studies.

The concert will open with Russian composer, Dmitri Shostakovich’s Folk Festival, a furious flurry of woodwind runs and brass fanfares. To commemorate the 200th anniversary year (1809) of his birth, Felix Mendelssohn’s delightful Overture for Winds, Op. 24 will be performed.

Also included on the program is Alfred Reed’s classic Russian Christmas Music which is based on the liturgical music of the Eastern Orthodox Church and gives the musical impression of Old Russia, well before World War II, during the Christmas season. Rounding out the program is a transcription of the choral classic, Ave Maria by Franz Biebl for two vocal soloists and wind band.
