BOLIVAR, MO – The SBU department of music is proud to present the Jazz Ensemble in concert at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 17 in the Meyer Recital Hall in the Geneva Casebolt Music Center on the main campus of SBU. The ensemble is under the direction of Dr. Jeffery Waters, professor of music and acting dean of the Casebolt College of Music, Arts and Letters.
The 18-piece big-band ensemble is the champion of American jazz in the campus community, and will once again feature student performers in a program of standards and contemporary jazz tunes. Favorites from the past include “Harlem Nocturne,” “Out of Nowhere,” and Chuck Mangione’s “Children of Sanchez.” A new arrangement of Astor Piazzolla’s signature work “Libertango” will round out the slate of more traditional tunes on the program.
Contemporary selections on the program include the funk-influenced “Off the Hook,” and one of the band’s perennial up-tempo swing favorites, “Vertigo.” The trombone section is featured in “Bonehead,” and the band also has fun playing a new swinging arrangement of the theme from television’s “Get Smart.”
“If you like jazz in any of its flavors—swing, Latin, funk, ballads—we like to think we offer a little something for everyone,” said Waters.
Admission is free, and the public is invited.
