SBU Formal Convocation to Launch Academic Year

BOLIVAR, MO --Southwest Baptist University will begin its official academic year with formal convocation at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 26, in Pike Auditorium on the Bolivar main campus. Dr. Richard Brewer, professor of psychology and recipient of the 2009 Orien B. Hendrex Distinguished Teacher Award, will present the annual convocation address.

 

The Distinguished Teacher Award is chosen by the current and three previous graduating classes and is presented annually to a faculty member for “outstanding teaching ability and personal guidance.”

 

Dr. Rosalyn Snellen, senior professor of biology, will be recognized for receiving the 2009 Parkway Distinguished Professor Award. The Christian College Education Committee of Parkway Baptist Church in Saint Louis awards this honor annually to faculty members from each of the four Missouri Baptist colleges who have made outstanding contributions to Christian education.

 

The faculty and staff Newcomer of the Year awards also will be presented during formal convocation.

DR. RICHARD L. BREWER

2009 Orien B. Hendrex Distinguished Teacher

                                               

Dr. Richard L. Brewer is the 2009 recipient of the Orien B. Hendrex Distinguished Teacher Award.  This award is presented annually to a faculty member who has been judged by the previous three years’ graduating classes to be outstanding in both teaching ability and personal guidance.  The Board of Trustees at Southwest Baptist University has designated this award in memory of former academic dean, Orien B. Hendrex.  This is the second time that Dr. Brewer has been selected as the Orien B. Hendrex Distinguished Teacher.

 

Dr. Brewer has been part of the University faculty since 1982 and occupies the rank of full professor.  He teaches numerous psychology classes and served as chair of the department of behavioral sciences from 1994-1998.

 

His clinical experience began at Quad-County Counseling Center in Princeton, Illinois.  In 1986, he began an association at the Family Institute of the Ozarks, on a part-time basis and still maintains a part-time, private practice in Bolivar.  Dr. Brewer is a licensed clinical psychologist health services provider, and is a member of the American Psychological Association.

 

He received an undergraduate degree in religious studies and psychology at Southwest Baptist College in 1978, a master of clinical psychology from Wheaton Graduate School in 1981, and a doctorate of clinical psychology in 1991 from Forest Institute of Professional Psychology.

 

Dr. Brewer has two married daughters, Kristin and Kara, and a son, the late Evan Brewer.  Also, he has three grandchildren; Hadley, Brady, and Maxwell.  He and his wife, Julie, reside in Bolivar and attend First Baptist Church. 

 

 

Dr. ROSALYN SNELLEN

2009 Parkway Distinguished Professor

 

Dr. Rosalyn Snellen graduated from Southwest Baptist University in 1973.  In 1978, shortly after completion of her Ph.D. from North Texas State University, she became a member of the SBU faculty.  Throughout her tenure at SBU, Dr. Snellen has served the University in a variety of capacities including: senior professor of biology, assistant dean of the College of Science and Mathematics, dean of the College of Science and Mathematics, and associate provost of the University.  Additionally, Dr. Snellen has been both the assistant and head coach for SBU’s softball team and has led University mission trips to East Asia.

 

Dr. Snellen successfully led the University’s recent efforts to again obtain Higher Learning Commission accreditation. Additionally, she has overseen the University’s general education committee since 2001. She has been a part of many other University committees over the years including: university planning advisory council, graduate council, deans’ council, an ad hoc committee for gender equity in athletics, and many others.  Additionally, Dr. Snellen was instrumental in the formation of the joint nursing program with St. John’s Hospital and was a part of the institutional coordinating committee for the ASN degree. The physical therapy program reinstatement and progress from a bachelor’s to a master’s degree occurred during her tenure as dean.

 

Dr. Snellen is or has been a part of many professional organizations including The Coalition of Christian Colleges and Universities, Women’s Leadership Development Institute, the American Association for Higher Education, the National Science Teachers Association, the National Association of Women in Education, the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society, and the North American Benthological Society.  

 

Dr. Snellen is an active member of WayPoint Church in Bolivar, and has volunteered at many local organizations such as the Salvation Army, Exodus Ministries, Alpha House, and International Friends.
