FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: June 8, 2009

BOLIVAR, Mo – Southwest Baptist University Director of Athletics Brent Good announced his resignation today.

Statements from Good and SBU President Dr. Pat Taylor are below.

Statement from Brent Good:

“I am resigning as the director of athletics at Southwest Baptist University effective July 2, 2009. After 32 years in college athletics, I believe it is time for me to pursue other opportunities. I have always claimed Proverbs 3:5-6, ‘Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.’ I have prayed about my decision and I feel God has other plans for me.

“I would like to thank Dr. Taylor and the Board of Trustees for the opportunity to serve as the director of athletics. I would also like to thank the athletic administration, coaches, the entire SBU community as well as the Bolivar community and businesses for their support during my tenure. I am very proud of the accomplishments of SBU athletics, and I will continue to support SBU from the sidelines and stands as much as possible. My wife, Pat, and I plan to live in Bolivar and continue to involve ourselves in the community for many years.”

Statement from SBU President Dr. Pat Taylor:

“I have enjoyed having Brent as a colleague and on the executive cabinet for the past four years. During the four years of Brent’s leadership in athletics, we have had many significant accomplishments. We have developed and achieved goals for enrollment and improved academic progress and improved graduation rates for our student-athletes. Under Brent’s leadership, the University has developed a strong corporate sponsorship program with many local businesses. The corporate sponsorships help offset the costs of improving the athletic program. Brent provided the leadership for the implementation of Honors Night for senior recognition and the reinstatement of the SBU Athletics Hall of Fame that had been dormant for several years.

“The NCAA recognizes the overall top sports program through the Director’s Cup. Points are awarded based on how teams finish in national championship competition. When Brent became the athletic director, he set a goal of SBU athletics finishing in the top 100 among all NCAA Division II schools. During the 2007-08 academic year, SBU finished 67th in Director’s Cup points. This year we are currently ranked 78th in the nation. This is a great testimony to Brent’s hard work in improving all of our sports programs.

“During Brent’s tenure we have had more MIAA championships and post-season appearances than at any other time in our history. We have had several teams receive national recognition by attaining NCAA regional and national rankings. We have had All-Americans and academic All-Americans and a national record set for pass receptions in all football divisions. We received the MIAA award for most-improved graduation rates during the 2007-08 academic year. Our student athletes have received numerous MIAA awards including the Academic Honor Roll and President’s List.

“Brent has served on several MIAA committees and represented SBU as a voting delegate at NCAA conventions. He has served the University with integrity, always putting the welfare of the student-athletes first, while following the NCAA and MIAA rules and regulations.

“Brent is respected for his faith, outstanding character, work ethic and integrity. I have enjoyed working with him during the past seven years, the last four years as athletic director and executive cabinet member. I will miss working with him on a daily basis.”

Currently, administrative duties will be divided between Assistant Athletic Director/Senior Woman Administrator Dr. L. Renae Myles and Assistant Athletic Director for Operations Mike Pitts.
