BOLIVAR, MO Two Southwest Baptist University students, Andrew Cook, senior computer information science major, Kansas City, Mo., and Tim Heimsoth, senior computer science/Math major, Cole Camp, Mo., took the crown in the first Forensic Programming Challenge sponsored by the Heart of America Regional Computer Forensics Lab (HARCFL) located in Kansas City, Mo.

According to the HARCFL website, the FPC is “a unique opportunity where college students not only conceptualize—but also create—a tool for possible use in the workplace. The tool will be designed to expose P2P software remnants, particularly information relating to the sharing and/or downloading of specific files from an evidentiary system.”

“We are very proud of Tim and Andrew,” said Dr. Tim DeClue, chair of the SBU Computer Information Science Department.  “God blessed them with wonderful intellectual abilities, and they have honed their gifts in our program.”  Cook and Heimsoth will be honored and receive a $1000 check today at the Kansas City offices of the HARCFL for their first-place effort.

According to the HARCFL website, a regional computer forensics laboratory is a “one-stop, full service forensics laboratory and training center devoted entirely to the examination of digital evidence in support of criminal investigations.”  Such investigations include, but not limited to cases involving terrorism, child pornography, crimes of violence, the theft or destruction to intellectual property, internet crime, and fraud.”  The HARCFL provides services to the FBI, the Missouri Highway Patrol, the Kansas City Police Department, as well as over 18 other federal, state and local crime-fighting organizations.
