“It was really a tremendous workshop,” said Dr. DeClue. “Dr. Panoff is a leading authority on supercomputing, and on petascale computing—which is computing at a thousand times faster than the fastest super computer available at the current time. Our students were exposed to some cutting edge knowledge that will be the way applied computer science affects our lives in two, five, or even ten years from now. It’s pretty amazing. Our students were the only undergraduates who were in attendance at the workshop, so they got to learn from and present to computer science faculty and researchers from all over the country.”
At the workshop, SBU faculty and students were given the opportunity to work with a supercomputer to help illustrate concepts related to high-performance computing (HPC). At the end of the workshop, each participant was given a chance to present the work he or she had accomplished during the week.
According to the Shodor website (Shodor.org), Shodor is a nonprofit organization serving students and educators by providing materials and instruction relating to computational science (scientific, interactive computing). Shodor is sponsored by private companies such as Intel, Microsoft Research, and IBM as well as public agencies.
