ANGEL Downtime
May 25-26, 2011

ANGEL 7.3 is the current version of the SBU Learning Management System (LMS) since Fall 2009.  The version 7.3 we started with is now no longer fully supported.  To ensure the LMS used by SBU for any and all courses remains well-supported, and keeps pace with user expectations, Information and Technology Services (ITS) will perform an upgrade on May 25-26 2011.

This downtime has been chosen to occur immediately after the submission of grades deadline for Spring 2011 undergraduates, and before the Memorial Day holiday and start of Summer 2011 undergraduate classes.  Summer and Fall 2011 courses are already on ANGEL, so work done with content between now and May 24th will be there after the upgrade process is complete.  Students will not be able to see all of their grade details from their ANGEL courses during the downtime, but will have access to grade information provided in WebAdvisor.

Most changes in ANGEL 7.4 will affect only those who administer the ANGEL system.  Students and faculty will find no significant differences in using 7.4 as learners and teachers.  For faculty, there will be some enhanced and new abilities.  To be integrated with the new Portal structure coming on June 1 2011, the usernames and passwords used to verify all ANGEL users will change to the new MySBU format.  Anyone already using WebAdvisor has made this username and password transition.

Not only will updating to ANGEL 7.4 keep the SBU LMS fully supported and Portal-prepared, but new abilities can be explored.  The ability to add Mobile Learning capabilities will be an option, and ITS has plans to explore these features during the 2011-2012 year.  Support for our existing 3rd party utilities, Turn-It-In and Elluminate will also move forward with ANGEL 7.4.  Teaching with ANGEL classes will continue to be offered online starting in Summer 2011 with 7.4 being covered, along with face to face offerings to be determined later.
