An Exhibition of the 1913 S.W.B.C. Time Capsule.

The 1913 S.W.B.C. time capsule and its contents will be exhibited in a permanent, rotating display in a museum quality display case in the foyer of the Harriett K. Hutchens Library, home of the Southwest Baptist University Archives.  The time capsule contents will be displayed in small batches in an exhibitat that will change every 2-3 months.

SBU received generous donations through the SBU Alumni Association's 50-Year Club.  The University and the University Archives extend our warmest appreciation to those individuals who donated funds toward this project.  Also, appreciation is expressed to the officers of the 50-Year Club and the staff of the SBU Office of Development.

Call (417) 328-1604 for the library hours or for directions to the library when the exhibit is on display.

This preliminary inventory was prepared by Sandra Brown, University Archivist, after the initial removal of the contents from the time capsule.  A more detailed group inventory will be prepared as the materials are processed for preservation purposes and added to the Archive collection.  Plans are being made to provide some public access through displays in the near future.

  • The Time Capsule Container

The time capsule itself was not counted in the total number of items.  It is constructed of metal, probably copper, and had been meticulously crafted to seal out moisture and air.  The sealed edged seemed to have been crimped under twice and when the item was opened there was a slight air intake sound that indicated that the contents were not only sealed in but probably in a slight vacuum.  This environment has caused the items, unless they were already deteriorated when packed into the time capsule, to stay in almost pristine condition.  Whereas the small envelope of materials found in this time capsule which had been in an earlier [c.1902] time capsule at the college, suffered major moisture damage.
