What is SWAN-MOBIUS?

MOBIUS is a consortium of academic libraries with 68 member colleges and universities in the state of Missouri.  MOBIUS creates a virtual collection of the approximately 18 million items in the member libraries and creates a single user interface that allows students, faculty and staff to request library books using any personal computer in any location with access to the Internet. Requested materials are delivered within one to three days of being requested online.

MOBIUS has 11 Clusters  or regionally organized groups

  • A cluster is an organizational group of Missouri libraries in a geographical region within MOBIUS.

  • The institutions that share a system are called a cluster.

  • There are 11 clusters.

  • SBU belongs to the SWAN cluster (see map to the right).

How Long Does It Take to Get A SWAN-MOBIUS Book?

Our courier system generally will be able to deliver requested books to the selected circulation desk in about three to four class days, not counting weekends or holidays.  Most libraries will process the requested books Monday through Friday except for holidays. Winter and summer term delivers may take slightly longer.

May I Request Media Materials or Other Library Materials?

No.  Media materials such as CDs; DVDs; equipment; reference books; special collections books; rare books; periodicals; magazines; newspapers, journals nor other non-circulating books may be borrowed through the SWAN-MOBIUS system.

It may be possible in the future to borrow some additional items other than circulating books.  Currently the policy remains as it was when SWAN-MOBIUS was organized -- to share circulating books.  Generally circulating books are the types of books you are allowed to checkout from libraries to take home with you for short periods of time, usually a few weeks.

It is important to keep in mind that each SWAN-MOBIUS library has its own policies in addition to the SWAN-MOIBUS policies.  What one library considers a circulating book (that may be checked out) might be a type of book that may not be checked out at some other library.  So any member library may have elected to place certain books in a noncirculating status.  That is why it is so important to consult the SWAN-MOBIUS catalog and ask a librarian for assistance if you have any questions about what is available for request through the SWAN-MOBIUS system.

If you have any questions about SWAN-MOBIUS books contact the University Libraries Reference Services Librarian.
