REMEMBER... SBU
I.D. Cards are Required for Reserve Materials Checkout |
General Information
All reserve materials in
University Libraries have these characteristics in common.
-
To checkout reserve materials a
current SBU I.D. card must be presented, even if only using the
item in-library.
-
Generally, reserve materials are
only available to SBU students, faculty and staff.
-
Reserve material checkout periods
are 2-hour in-library; 1-day; 3-day or 7-day checkout.
Faculty Reserves
In order to assist their students in
class preparations many faculty members will place library items
(such as books, CDs, DVDs) or items belonging to the faculty member
(such as their personal books, CDs, videos, test notes, practice
tests, sample term papers, etc.) on reserve. These items are
usually available for 2-hour in-library use by SBU students.
Some material may be available for longer checkout period.
Some students choose to make photocopies of the material while
others prefer to sit and study the material in the library.
Material placed on Faculty Reserve is
listed in the SWAN Catalog. To locate the material:
Go to the SWAN catalog >>>
Scroll down to the Options Section
See:
Once you do the Instructor Name or the
Course Name search you may see a list of names so be sure to pick
your professor's exact name. Then, if the professor has more than
one course listed, pick your course. Once you select your
course you will see a list of the items the professor has on reserve
in the library. If no items are listed the professor does not yet
have any items on reserve. If items are listed you will see
the titles of each item and the call numbers. You will need
the call numbers Examples of call numbers are:
SBU BOL Faculty Reserves -- KITCHIN FOLDER R07 --
AVAILABLE
SBU BOL Media Reserve -- VC 1294 -- AVAILABLE
Make a note of the call number of the
book or folder number you want and give it to the staff person at
the Circulation & Reserves Desk or Media Services Desk. They
will need that information to retrieve the item from the reserves
shelf. Then you can checkout the item.
Permanent Reserves
At the Circulation & Reserves Desk some
materials are kept permanently on reserve. Examples are:
Value Line and Standard & Poors: current editions of
writing style guides such the MLA and APA, and study guides for GRE,
LSAT, etc. Items on permanent reserve are designated as
PERMANENT RESERVE in the catalog under the LOCATION column next to
the call number.
Reserve Periodicals
A few current magazines and newspapers
are available at the reserves desk. Generally these are the titles
that tend to be so heavily used when they are new that a 2-hour
check out system is useful. Titles like Time, Newsweek, Sports
Illustrated, People Magazine, Wall Street Journal, etc. may be found
at the Circulation & Reserves Desk. Most of these titles are
also available online. Check the
A-Z Journal Tracker
to find the location of any of the University Libraries magazines,
journals or newspapers.
Media Reserves
Media items such as CDs, DVDs, tapes,
etc., may be placed on reserve as permanent reserve or faculty
reserve materials. In Hutchens Library,
Media Services is located in L128 and has
different hours that the main library. So if you are
interested in using media reserves you will need to be aware of
those hours. At other University Libraries locations all
reserve materials are available at the Circulation & Reserves Desk.
