Frequently Asked
Questions:
Borrowing Privileges and Obligations
As a library
user you have many services available to you. Likewise,
you have certain responsibilities and obligations such as
returning library materials promptly, taking proper care of
library materials, and paying for any fines or charges that
result from overdue, nonreturned, or damaged materials checked
out on your card. For further information regarding
library borrowing privileges and obligations, inquire at the
Circulation & Reserves Desk.
Circulation of Library Materials
Library
materials are checked out at the Circulation & Reserves Desk.
- In the Harriett K. Hutchens

- Reserve materials must be checked
out whether for in-library use or for out-of-library use (some
materials do not leave the library).
- All patrons who wish to check out
library materials must present their current SBU barcoded
identification card or library guest patron card.

cost of each item, plus the accumulated fine per item.
Notice: Fines,
fees and replacement charges for SWAN-MOBIUS materials are
determined by the policies of the SWAN-MOBIUS Consortium and the
individual member libraries within the consortium.
Help Us Keep Costs Down
Please avoid keeping
library materials past the due date. Processing overdue
materials costs the Library precious funds that could be better
spent on purchasing new materials rather than trying to recover
loaned materials. Other patrons may be needing the
materials you have borrowed, so your conduct as a borrower of
materials really does affect other people!
Library Privileges for "Guest
Patrons"
If you are not a
currently enrolled SBU student or a current SBU employee you may
apply for a guest patron card. For further information
about guest patron library privileges and obligations, see the
"Guest Patron Policy" section of the
University Libraries Policies Manual
which is on file at the Circulation & Reserves Desk.
Loan Periods
Length of checkout
period will vary depending on your borrowing category
(undergraduate student, graduate student, faculty, staff, guest
patron, etc.) AND according to the various types of materials
(books, media, reserve items, etc.). Therefore, check the
due date very carefully on the date due slip and check your
account through the SWAN catalog menu item, "View Your Own
Patron Record" to be sure of due dates.
NOTICE:
As a courtesy, library personnel may attempt to contact patrons about
their overdue materials, but patrons are responsible for
knowing when the materials are due, returning the materials on time and for paying any fine or fee
resulting from overdue materials.
