"Previous Questions"

Question:  I'm trying to access the A-to-Z Journal off campus and it's asking for a login and password. I was wondering what that was, and if I could access the journal off campus. Thanks for your help.

Answer:  When you try to access any database from a NON-SBU network, you have to authentic yourself, which is the login page you received. Your SBU network login and password should authentic you and allow you access to the databases. If you have problems, call the Circulation and Reserves Desk at 417-328-1620. They can give you a generic username and password. You need to have your student ID number for them to verify you are a student.

Question:  I am working on my dissertation for my PhD in Education. In doing so, I have located several dissertation abstracts in the Proquest Dissertation database. However, the only thing I can get from the database is the abstract and a 24 page preview, not the full text. Is their any way we can obtain the full text of a dissertation? What information from me regarding the specific dissertations do you need?

Answer:  I'm going to answer your question and give you some information you didn't request. The University Libraries can give you access to Dissertation Abstracts which will be a more comprehensive index of dissertations. We simply have to turn the access on. It is listed on the Library Database page. If you want, I can turn on access.

To request an interlibrary loan (ILL) of any material, including dissertation, requires that you determine that we do not own the material. When you determine that, which we do not own many dissertations, you can place an ILL request. From the Library's homepage, follow these links:

  1. General Information (Left Toolbar)
  2. Interlibrary Loan (listed in the "Important Information of SBU Library Patrons)
  3. this form, (located in the last sentence of the ILL Section)
  4. Fill in the data and submit
It is buried for a reason.

Question:  I will be attending the Centri Kid Camp that will be on the SBU campus during the week of July 11-15. I am taking classes online through Fort Hays State University and not logging on for an entire week will drasticly effect my grade. Will it be possible for me to use internet services in your library during this week to log into my courses? Thank You.

Answer:  The University provides an Internet Cafe that is available for all guest to use. It is located in the same building as the Student Union. I believe the Student Union is the primary place that visiting camps meet. You should be able to readily find the Cafe. When you arrive, ask a University employee for directions.

Question:  I am trying to request the book entitled Passing the Baton: Church Planting That Empowers (La Habra, CA: Center for Organizational and Ministry Development, 1993).  I tried to put in my name and ID number, but I could not get it to go through. Could you help me please?  Thanks!

Answer:  The key is your ID number. Unfortunately, the SWAN catalog doesn't indicate that the system is expecting a 7 digit ID number. It does indicate you need to put "SBU" at the end of the number. In order for you to get the system to recognize your account, this is the format for your ID:

0######SBU                 example:  0999999SBU

Since you have never logged into the SWAN system, you will NOT have a pin number. Leave that field blank and the system will ask you to enter a new pin number on the next screen. If you need more help, you can e-mail me again or call the Library at 328-1604. If you are calling long distance the number is 800-743-5774. That number is answered from 8-5, M-F.
