Redford Room
This room holds the primary collection of memorabilia and heritage materials that were transferred from the old Historical Gallery to the University Archives. It is not open to the public. It is named in memory of Dr. and Mrs. Courts Redford. Though Dr. Redford is greatly beloved by the SBU family for his contributions as president of SWBC from 1930 - 1943 and his later assistance as interim president for nine months in 1967, it is not as well known that he was the first college archivist. When the college decided to set up the archives as the college centennial approached in 1978, Dr. Redford was instrumental in establishing the collection. Mrs. Redford assisted him. To honor Dr. and Mrs. Redford for their work the first archives room, which was located in Estep Library, was named in their honor. ACCESS & PRESERVATION The University Archive Preservation & Access Policy states that, "While it is understood that the major value of archives is to provide information to researchers, the first priority of an archives program must be the physical security and preservation of the collection for future use. Therefore, access to the University Archives collection shall be balanced with arrangements for the physical safety and preservation of the collection." For this reason the the University Archives is not open to the public but information contained with the archive collection may be accessed, as resources allow, through the use of the call system and available finding aids. SOUTHWEST BAPTIST UNIVERSITY'S OFFICIAL HISTORY SBU is very fortunate to have an official history, To Noonday Bright: A History of Southwest Baptist University: 1878-1984 written by one who knew the institution very well. Mayme Hamlett, a former SWBC English professor, wrote the book in her retirement years, expanding on an earlier work, The Story of Southwest Baptist College. Copies of To Noonday Bright are available in the University Libraries for checkout and are also available for purchase in the SBU Bookstore. Readers will find the book to be a rich resource of both detailed information about the factual history and spiritual heritage of SBU as well as the extraordinary men and women who have served and studied here. There are several excerpts from the book on this website. Where excerpts are used the full citation to the book will be provided along with copyright information. Numerous references are made to the book throughout this website. Where references are made the abbreviation, TNB, may be used.
