Suggested Academic Program for Majors in Social
Science Education.
The projected course offerings are scheduled tentatively and will not
be finalized until the semester prior to the offering. The Course Source, the Official Schedule of class offerings for the next sessions is published after the fifth week of each semester prior to student enrollment/registration for upcoming classes.
On this page you will find below a Summary of requirements for the social science education major. and a suggested semester by semester break down. To access a particular semester click on the appropriate section of the following table.
In the suggested program below each course is labeled to show what requirement it meets. - * = University Graduation Requirement
- ** = University General Education Requirement.
- **SS = General education social studies courses prerequisite to the social science education major.
- **CS = General education cultural studies course prerequisite to the social science education major.
- Ma, Me, Mi, Mu, Mw = Parts of the academic major in social science education.
- E = The professional education certification requirement.

The course requirements for the
social science education major (Catalog 2008, p. 105) are as follows:
- Fifteen (15) hours of general education are required as a prerequisite to this major. This includes the required 12 hours of social studies (marked **SS) and the required 3 hours of cultural studies (marked **CS), as follows: (See p. 176 for HIS 1113 and 2213; See p. 192 for POL 1113, See p. 165 for ECO 2003 or 2023, & See p. 166 for EDU 2113). These general education courses are required but not counted as hours on the academic major. Transfer students must complete all deficiencies as a prerequisite to the social science education major.
- Thirty-nine (39) hours constitute the social science education major (marked Ma, Me, Mi, Mu or Mw). These hours are distributed as follows:
- Eighteen (18) hours of required introductory social science courses (marked Mi), including: (See p. 174 for HIS 1123 and 2223, See p. 192 pol POL 2223, See p. 192 for PSY 1013 See p. 196 for SOC 1003 or 1013, & See p. 172 for GEO 1103).
- Nine (9) hours of advanced United States history courses (marked Mu), elected from (See p. 176 for HIS 3783, 3833, 3843, 3893, 4953 or 4993).
- Three (3) hours of advanced ancient & medieval world history courses (marked Ma), elected from (See p. 176 for HIS 3323, 3333, 3423, 3463, 3613, 4303, 4313, 4323, 4413, 4953 or 4993).
- Three (3) hours of advanced modern world history courses (marked Mw), elected from (See p. 176 for HIS 3513, 3523, 3673, 4953 or 4993).
- Six (6) hours of other advanced social science electives (marked Me), not otherwise counted or required in the academic major or in the professional certification requirements. They are to be elected from the available remaining offerings in See p. 165 for economics, See p. 176 for history, See 192 for political
science, See p. 196 for sociology, and See p. 192 for psychology (excluding PSY 3053, 3063, and 4033).
- Thirty-six (36) hours of professional education courses (marked E) in addition to the general education social studies prerequisite (EDU 2113). These courses are required for certification to teach the social studies at the secondary school level, but they are not counted as part of your academic major. (Catalog 2008, pp. 92-93). Reminder: You must pass the Praxis II examination before you may begin the Student Teaching (Block) Semester.(Catalog 2008, pp. 92)
Reminder: You are required to complete the Major Field Examination in history during the Senior semester you are not scheduled in the block.
